On route to Morocco, we spent a night in Athens, and we really enjoyed this ancient city. This was the best option for a flight from Budapest to Morocco so we decided to embrace this quick stopover, we hopped off the plane and caught a train straight to the the Syntagma Square which is in the centre of town and stayed at the Athens Capital Center Hotel which was just a short walk away.

As soon as we checked into the hotel, we were back out the door to make the most of the little time we had and the sunny weather. Firstly we saw the changing of the Guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is off the square. Then we managed to get the last tickets for the day to see the Acropolis of Athens. We were awed by the architecture and history of this iconic site, and even got to witness the daily flag service performed by the army.
As the sun began to set over the sea, we headed back into the town for dinner. We decided to try some traditional Greek food, and had yeros and cold beer, both of which were absolutely delicious. The warm and sunny weather was a delightful surprise, especially since it was January. We also had to do a quick shopping run as our bags were checked all the way through and we needed a change of clothes for the next day.

The next morning, we started the day with a delicious buffet in the hotel restaurant. The food was fantastic, but we agreed that next time we would head out to one of the many nearby cafes for a local breakfast.
Our brief stay in Athens made a lasting impression. From the stunning Acropolis to the warm and sunny weather, although we were only there for one night and were just transiting between Budapest and Marrakesh, we would love to return in the future to explore more of this timeless city and to see more of the many Greek Islands as well.
