We are very excited to have successfully completed our first house sit in Canada, we got to discover a very cool neighbourhood, ‘Kits’ just outside of Vancouver (and the birthplace of Lululemon) and spend time caring for a bengal, Nala. She is a gorgeous cat, very chatty and snuggly but on her own terms – she was a rescue and a little unsure so we let her come to us on her own terms. She ended up sleeping at my feet the whole stay, it may have been the heated blanket but I think it was also for the company.
We were also reminded that cats are great at hiding, they are completely silent and stealthy – best to check under the covers on the bed, amongst a pile of clothes or on some freshly laundered towels before panicking!
And that the best way to get a cat to like you is to ignore it. This is because cats can interpret human attempts to catch or otherwise force their attention on the cat as aggressive behavior. We also like to talk to the cat and try and engage them with toys but just a little at a time, the most important thing is to make sure their basic needs are taken care of and they can decide if they’d like more one on one time with us.
Today we are off to West Vancouver to take care of two lively little dogs, we’ll hike and explore the area with them and tomorrow we are off for a morning snowboarding lesson at Grouse Mountain, we are hoping to hone our skills before heading to Cypress Mountain – a favourite with locals, we’re told this mountain has the most runs of all.
