We finished up our travels in Canada with three nights in the Yukon, we were anticipating a winter wonderland and sub 20-30 degrees and while the flight here took us over thousands of snow capped mountains and some of the most remote and vast wilderness we’ve ever seen (first photo from above)
We landed into the Yukon to a balmy 10 degrees celsius and almost no snow on the ground.
The locals tell us its about 6 weeks earlier than normal and the year prior it was about 3 weeks earlier and had a flow on to growth of berries for the local bear population, there wasn’t enough to sustain them through the season so this meant there were more incidents with bears looking for food (and resulting in those animals being euthanised) so we can only imagine this will be an issue again in 2019. There is just no denying that climate change is having a serious impact here.
We enjoyed our time regardless, taking a little R&R and waiting for the Northern Lights (alas we had only small glimpses two nights).
We visited the wildlife park where we saw Moose, Bison, Elk, Mountain Goats, Snow Foxes, Lynx and more – this was a real highlight!
Now we are about to head off on flight 1 of 3 to St Lucia where we’ll visit the BodyHoliday and enjoy the sunshine!
